Starting tretinoin successfully is all about low strength, low frequency, and maximum hydration. Because tretinoin speeds up cell turnover, rushing into daily application usually triggers severe redness, flaking, and irritation (known as retinization).
1. Preparation & Dosages
Start low: Begin with a low concentration, typically 0.025% cream or gel to let your skin adapt.
Strip down your routine: While building tolerance, stop all other active ingredients like AHAs (glycolic/lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), vitamin C, and physical scrubs.
Essentials only: Stick to a gentle, non-foaming cleanser, a rich moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+).
2. The Application Routine (Night-time Only)
Cleanse and Let Dry Entirely
Critical step to prevent severe irritation
Wash your face with a mild, gentle cleanser. Pat dry and wait 20 minutes until your skin is completely bone-dry. Applying tretinoin to damp skin causes rapid absorption, which dramatically increases irritation and stinging.
Protect Sensitive Areas
Optional barrier protection
Apply a small amount of plain ointment (like Vaseline or Aquaphor) around delicate zones: the corners of your nose, around your eyes, and on your lips to prevent pooling and cracking.
Apply a Pea-Sized Amount
Less is more
Squeeze a pea-sized amount for your entire face. Dot it evenly across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin, then spread a thin layer over the face. Using more will not speed up results, it will only burn your skin barrier.
Moisturize (The Buffer or Sandwich Method)
Direct Method: Wait 10 minutes after tretinoin, then apply a rich moisturizer.
Sandwich Method (Best for sensitive skin): Apply a layer of moisturizer first, wait 10-15 minutes, apply your pea-sized tretinoin, and then seal with a second layer of moisturizer.
3. Schedule & Frequency
Do not use tretinoin every night right away. Build tolerance using this schedule:
Weeks 1-2: 2 nights per week (e.g., Monday and Thursday).
Weeks 3-4: Every 3rd night.
Weeks 5+: Every other night, working up to nightly only if your skin isn't peeling, burning, or red.
Key Golden Rules
Sunscreen is non-negotiable: Tretinoin makes skin significantly more susceptible to UV damage and sunburn. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning, even indoors.
Listen to your barrier: If your skin feels raw, stings when applying basic moisturizer, or turns bright red, pause tretinoin for a few days. Focus strictly on barrier repair creams until healthy, then restart at a lower frequency.
Be patient: You may experience a "purge" (temporary breakout flare-up) or light peeling around weeks 2-6. Real results in texture, tone, and collagen production take 3 to 6 months of consistent use.
