Why are we so good at taking care of everyone else, but not always ourselves?

Why are we so good at taking care of everyone else—
yet when it comes to ourselves, we often come last?
Three years ago, following stomach surgery, I was told I would need a Vitamin B12 injection every 13 weeks for the rest of my life.
I’ve always believed in taking responsibility for my own health, so rather than relying solely on my GP, I trained to administer B12 injection.
This meant I could stay on top of my health, especially after my mummy makeover in May 2025, when I also changed my supplements.
I took them regularly for years and changed my supplements to focus on hormone support, hair growth, and skin health.
I am very sensitive to changes in my body and after hitting 44 I felt like it was time to reassess things.
Fast forward to the last few weeks.
I started struggling with sleep. I’d wake up with a racing heart. At first, I assumed it was anxiety. As it continued, my thoughts spiralled—Could this be something wrong with my heart?
I even messaged my next-door neighbour, who’s a nurse, asking what a heart attack feels like… and whether someone at 44 could have one.
Here’s the irony.
I know the symptoms of low B12 inside out. I administer these injections regularly. I talk about them every day.
Yet it never crossed my mind that I could be deficient—despite being seven months overdue for my own injection.
On my walk to work this week, I genuinely considered booking a GP appointment for the first time in years because I felt so unwell. Then it hit me:
I’m overdue for a B12 injection. Why don’t I just do one?
The effect was almost immediate.
My heart stopped pounding.
My body relaxed.
I slept properly.
My energy returned.
Now, B12 isn’t a miracle cure for everyone. If your levels are already optimal, you may only notice a subtle sense of wellbeing. But if you are low, the difference can be life-changing.
What really struck me was this:
While I was feeling exhausted, anxious, and “not myself,” how well was I truly showing up for others? I’d been talking at work about how drained I felt, worrying about my health, and functioning far below my best.
It was a powerful reminder that you cannot pour from an empty cup.
If you’ve been feeling:
• Constantly tired
• Low in energy
• Anxious or run down
• Not quite yourself
It may be time to prioritise you.
If you would like to book a B12 consultation or injection, or simply want to discuss whether it could benefit you, we offer these regularly and would love to help.
Hit book now below and choose Vitamins and Longevity.
Your health matters—just as much as everyone else’s.
Warm wishes,
Katie.xx
