When healthy becomes toxic

What surprised me the most receiving the clients blood results back this week wasn't the deficiencies, it was the dangerously high levels of vitamins. We just blindly supplement. Most times it's harmless. B12, for example, you will wee or sweat out the excess. But for fat-soluble supplements like vitamin D, it's actually really toxic.
We think we are super healthy, supplementing all things on the ‘you should take list’. Are we actually doing more harm than good? The supplement industry is relatively unregulated, so some doses are just too high for you. The clients who have had extremely high results have shown me what they take, and the dosages are insane! Let's face it, if a 20 stone man uses the same vitamins as an 8 stone woman, how can the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) on the bottle be the same?
I am just as guilty.
I started supplements at 16 and have loved them! Early Last year, I was taking 15 tablets a day. Some were £70 for a month's supply, but I didn’t care because I felt like I needed them.
Then, five months ago, I stopped and focused on the essentials. I have been taking magnesium, omega-3 and creatine powder every day and iron every other day. I tested my blood last week (43 bio markers). Other than my potassium being high, everything on the vitamins and minerals was fine. So, did I ever need all those vitamins?
Cressy, one of our therapists, had calcium levels so high that the report said to stop taking calcium or risk kidney stones. She said she has taken high levels since turning 40, thinking she was preventing an illness. She was taking a mega dose, but was probably getting enough from her diet. It's not just a waste of money; it's dangerous!
If your diet is healthy, do we actually need all these supplements? Probably not…
I promise this will be my last time to preach about biotin and why I don’t inject it. And, by the way, I got sucked in too! When Biotin injections really got popular, I went and did a training course in it (Which isn’t surprising because I love a course). Then I actually looked into it and have NEVER injected it!
So, there was a post on one of the EG sites last week, “Can anyone do a biotin injection? “
I replied, explaining that ‘it's probably going to be a waste of money’. Biotin deficiency is extremely rare. I can do a biotin injection if someone shows me a blood test confirming that it was low. But better to do a blood test specifically for hair loss, then work out if it's a hormonal/vitamin deficiency, then you know what you are working with. Also, if you had a stressful time or illness three months ago, then it will pass and is only temporary.
Of course, people started to tag themselves in the post, offering to do the treatment. To clarify, biotin deficiency is so rare it's hardly ever seen, so if your hair loss is caused by a vitamin deficiency, it would be more likely B12 or iron.
Hair loss caused by hormones/stress, or illness won’t be fixed with supplements.
Finally, Biotin can interfere and cause false blood test results, so ensure you stop taking it three days before any blood test.
You can so easily spend a fortune on supplements/hair care and never understand why your hair is thinning or falling out. So, save yourself the time and effort and simply get to the root of it with a blood test!
We offer blood tests focused on our clients' needs. Its honestly worth the investment once a year to know your numbers so you can spend your money on the supplements you actually need. We offer one just for vitamins and minerals which is £125.
But if your hair is your concern, please consider a blood test, one specifically for hair loss. I have suffered from thinning hair twice in my life and know it’s a scary time.
These are under Book now/Blood tests. Results emailed back in 48 hrs with full report included - no guesswork. It gives a clear breakdown of how to increase or decrease your levels.
Tuesday, I am off to Jamaica without my husband and four kids for three days! Yes, I am that desperate for sun!
I look forward to seeing you all soon.
Have a beautiful Easter weekend.
